The California Geological Survey (CGS) uses geological mapping, landslide assessments, and rainfall information to help identify hazards and inform safer decisions. Learn about the work being done to keep Californians safe.
Science in Action
- Our CGS team has staff who specialize in landslide hazards and mitigation. If rainfall trends above average, or if multiple storms occur back-to-back, the risk of overly saturated rock and soil on steep slopes increases the risk of landslides and debris flows. CGS scientists study data and trends to suggest infrastructure improvements that can reduce risk to both property and life. - The Burned Watershed Geohazards (BWG) Program helps California communities prepare before and after natural hazards by providing maps, data, and rapid burned watershed assessments. Areas that have recently experienced wildfires are at higher risk for landslides and debris flows, and this program helps assess that risk in order to provide mitigation recommendations.
